James Richard Baker

Today I added one headstone photograph to the page of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Baker’s Road, Marie Joseph, Guysborough County, NS.

James R. Baker

1896 – 1977

This is probably James Richard Baker who married Iza Marie Smith on March 23, 1936 at St. Barnabas Rectory, Ecum Secum, Guysborough County, NS. According to their marriage record, James was 38 years old, which would put his birth year as c1898. James was born at Ecum Secum, Guysborough County, NS, the son of Elizabeth Smith and James Baker. He worked as a fisherman and lived at Marie Joseph.

Iza Marie Smith was 22 years old at the time of marriage, giving her a birth year of c1914. She was born at Necum Teuch, the daughter of Ellen Lorinda Smith and Ansell Smith. She worked as a housemaid.

Stephen W. Pace’s genealogy page has James Richard Baker, born February 10, 1896, the son of Lydia Elizabeth Smith and James Albert Baker who were married January 6, 1870 at Marie Joseph. This gives supporting evidence that the headstone belongs to the James Richard Baker in the marriage record.

According to various sources on the Internet, Ina Patricia Meisner was the daughter of Olive Zoe Pace (1882, Liscomb – 1939) and Andrew Jeffrey Meisner (1877, Liscomb – 1902, Halifax). I have no evidence to support this, so use this information as a guide.

From a note of an obituary being published, Laurie MacLean Zinck passed away at the age of 86, at Sherbrooke, Guysborough County, NS in July 2010. The obituary appeared in the Halifax Chronicle Herald on July 19, 2010. I may have this in my file somewhere, and if I find it, I’ll post it in the Obituary section.

Some stones will last centuries, but this one may only last a life time, and this is why it is so important to capture these perishable grave markers while the printing and details are still visible. This is a beautifully-made cross, one that while stands will invite visitors to the come and take a look.

According to Douglas Lewis Feltmate’s obituary, he was the son of Alma Ruth Feltmate and the grandson of Mary Jane and Nathaniel Feltmate. He married Mary Glenn and had two children. He died on June 2, 2002, at the age of 53, doing what he loved: sport fishing.

Effie Mae Clark Westhaver and Family

Today I added a headstone photograph (taken 2005) to the page of St. Matthew’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Baker’s Road, Marie Joseph, Guysborough County, NS.

Westhaver

1879 – 1966

I had seen this headstone a few times on my walks through the cemetery and until today, I didn’t know the history behind it. It’s not your typical headstone, and I knew no connection to the community with the Westhaver name, so it piqued my interest. Some mysteries about Effie still exist—such as where was she born—but many other questions have been answered.

Effie Mae Clark (or Clarke) was born in 1879 according to the headstone, but in January 1881 if the 1911 Canada Census is to be believed. In the spring of 1911, she was 29 years old and living with her husband George Westhaver, who worked as a labourer at a local mill, at Marie Joseph. Three children lived in the household: George Jr. (age 3), Amy (age 2) and Robert (age three months). Also, Bessie J. MacKay, only 13, lived with them as a domestic servant. Perhaps Bessie was a niece of hers or George’s and they had taken her in.

Three birth records connected with Effie and George were found on the Nova Scotia Genealogy website. They include:

I also found one death record.

  • Anna Patricia Westhaver was born March 30, 1919 at Marie Joseph, NS. She died of pneumonia on November 30, 1930, at home. She was 11 years, 8 months old. She was buried Marie Joseph on December 3, 1930. I wonder if she was buried alongside her mother at St. Matthew’s.

Effie and George’s son Robert Irwin, who went by Robert Irvine, served as a sapper with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the Canadian Army. He was killed in action on August 10, 1944 in Calvados, France. He was married to Jean, who was living at Timmins, Ontario, at the time of his death. He is remembered on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial website.

Effie passed away in 1966, and her husband George passed away in 1972. He is buried in St. James United Church Point Cemetery, Sheet Harbour, Halifax County, NS. Their daughter Amy Eliza married Jack W. Winn (1907 – 1981); she died in 1994. George A. Jr., who was born in 1907, married Kathleen Agnes Logan (1909 – 1956); he died in 1978.

UPDATE: This is not yet confirmed, but I believe I found Effie in the 1891 Census, living in Marie Joseph with her parents, Annie and John, and siblings John and James. This suggests Effie was born in Marie Joseph.

Ever Remembered, Ever Loved

Alma and George were married around 1919, probably at Belleoram, Fortune Bay, Newfoundland, where their children were born. The 1921 Newfoundland Census listed George, age 25, as born at Rencontre, Fortune Bay, NL. He was living with his wife, Alma, age 22, and his son Clarence, age 1.

  • Mullins, Alma, female, wife, married, age 22, born Oct 1898 at Belleoram, NL
  • Mullins, Clarence, male, son, single, age 1, born Jul 1920 at Belleoram, NL

Alma’s maiden name may be Critchell. Her daughter, Emily, born in 1925, bares this name as a middle name, and there are families in Belleoram with this as a surname.

The couple arrived in Nova Scotia probably during the war years. They were here no later than 1945 when their daughter Emily married Leonard Tibert of Liscomb Mills.

From their daughter Emily Critchell Mullins Tibert’s obituary, Alma and George’s other children were found: Janet, Clarence, Ida and Doris.

Clarence was killed in action in the Second World War. An image of his headstone is found on Newfoundland’s Grand Bank website. The inscription reads:

Second World War Veterans: Breen and Tibert

poppyI added two headstones found in St. Matthew’s Anglican Church Cemetery on Baker Road, Marie Joseph. They were for Second World War veterans William ‘Roger’ Breen and Clod ‘Leonard’ Courtney Tibert, and their wives.

My uncle Leonard served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He was severely wounded on D-Day +1 and was eventually returned to Canada. The ‘Clod’ as his first name appeared in the family Bible. He dropped it and never used it again.

The obituaries for these two men are also on site.

Also added to the site today were two marriage records. They were for…

  • Jane Ann Patterson who married Henry Charles Edward Baylis on December 21, 1871 at Fairfield, Dartmouth, NS.
  • Jane Malay who married Jacob Emery Croft on October 29, 1901 at Gegoggin, Guysborough County, NS.

Two death records added today were for…

  • Jacob Emery Croft, the son of Hannah Elizabeth Mailman and Henry Croft, who died April 4, 1954 at West Liscomb, Guysborough County, NS. He was 79 years old. The record states he was born on January 13, 1875, and that he worked as a fisherman for 55 years. He was married to Jane at the time. He was buried in the West Liscomb Cemetery, which is located near Slate Rock. I’ve been to Slate Rock many times, and one day when I learned about the few headstones in this small cemetery, I attempted to find it. However, it was grown in, and after searching for an hour, we still didn’t find it. I hope to return this summer, find it and take pictures of the stones.
  • Hannah Elizabeth Mailman died April 12, 1916 at the age of 77 years. She married Henry Croft and was Jacob Emery Croft’s mother. Her death record states she was born at Gegoggin, NS. She was buried at St. Luke’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Liscomb.

Error Alert

The birth record for Joshua Ansell Turner is mistakenly indexed as Joshua Ansell on the Nova Scotia Genealogy website. The person recording the birth failed to put the surname in the right column, so the person who indexed it used Ansell—the middle name—as the surname.

If I encounter any mysterious as I construct this site, I’ll add it to my daily posts as well as the Mysteries page. I make several attempts using various records to locate the information before I add it to my Mysteries File.

Mystery #1

McCutcheon, Gideon: Born May 12, 1866 at Marie Joseph, the son of Zula McCutcheon. He was an illegitimate child. I could find no further information on him, so I don’t know if he was adopted out or the family moved.

His mother’s name was difficult to read. I guessed it a Zula, but it could have been Zela. Also, the informant, which usually is a parent, was spelt Zouba (the best I can decipher). Perhaps the person recording the birth made the mistake.

The surname was also difficult to read. The best I can determine is McCutcheon, but it might have been McCutchean or McCutchen.

I came across the name Zebulon McCucheon on the Internet, and I wonder if this is the name.

I tried to find this record by using just the surname with various spellings—McCutchen, McCutcheon, McCutchean—to no avail. I even tried with Mac. To see the digital image of the record on Nova Scotia Genealogy, search for Margaret Jewers, Guysborough County, 1866. You’ll Gideon on line 203. If you have information on him or the correct spelling of his mother’s name, please let me know (Diane: tibert@ns.sympatico.ca)

Mystery #2

Meisner, M.: Born May 5, 1866 at Marie Joseph, NS, the daughter of Mary and Samuel Meisner. Her parents were married in 1846  at Halifax, NS.

No proper first name was assigned to this baby girl. After researching on the Internet, I came up with one possibility: Naomi.

According to Dr. Kenneth S. Paulsen’s genealogy website, Naomi was the daughter of Mary Maria Fleet (1818, Chester  –  October 6, 1911, Marie Joseph, daughter of Eleanor Covey and Michael Fleet) and Samuel Martin Meisner (September 4, 1821, Lunenburg – January 3, 1914, Marie Joseph). Naomi was born about 1866 at Marie Joseph, and died 1888, age 22, at Liscomb. On August 24, 1883, Naomi married Leroy Langille in Liscomb. They had one child, Manley J. Langille (1884 – April 1, 1951, Liscomb).

If you have any information to share on M. Meisner or know for certain it is or is NOT Naomi, please let me know (Diane: tibert@ns.sympatico.ca)
