Forever in Our Hearts

William ‘John’ Typert (most records used this spelling) was born October 23, 1912 at Liscomb Mills, Guysborough County, NS, the son of Eva Selina McDonald and William Clarence Typert. October 23rd is when his family celebrated his birthday, so that is our official date for my uncle. His baptism on July 27, 1941 at Necum Teuch confirms this. A record at the Nova Scotia Archives has October 12th, and his military record states October 24, 1914.

John lived common-law with Bernice Mabel Shrider and together, they had two children who are still living.

John married Ida Mullins on August 17, 1950. Together they had five children, plus John became step-father to one child Ida brought into the marriage.

Ida was born June 26, 1927 at Belloram, Fortune Bay, NL, the daughter of Alma and George Mullins. Her sister, Emily Critchell Mullins, married John’s brother Clod ‘Leonard’ Courtney Tibert. Both lived much of their married life at Marie Joseph.

John died October 31, 1975 from a massive heart attack during transport from Liscomb Mills to Sheet Harbour Memorial Hospital. During his lifetime, he worked as a lumberman in the local mills and in the woods, and for Roy Judge in Halifax in demolition and excavating.

During the Second World War, he served with the Merchant Navy and extensively travelled the North Atlantic Ocean.

Ida died December 25, 1986.

Second World War Veterans: Breen and Tibert

poppyI added two headstones found in St. Matthew’s Anglican Church Cemetery on Baker Road, Marie Joseph. They were for Second World War veterans William ‘Roger’ Breen and Clod ‘Leonard’ Courtney Tibert, and their wives.

My uncle Leonard served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He was severely wounded on D-Day +1 and was eventually returned to Canada. The ‘Clod’ as his first name appeared in the family Bible. He dropped it and never used it again.

The obituaries for these two men are also on site.

Forever in Our Hearts

Also added to the site today were two marriage records. They were for…

  • Jane Ann Patterson who married Henry Charles Edward Baylis on December 21, 1871 at Fairfield, Dartmouth, NS.
  • Jane Malay who married Jacob Emery Croft on October 29, 1901 at Gegoggin, Guysborough County, NS.

Two death records added today were for…

  • Jacob Emery Croft, the son of Hannah Elizabeth Mailman and Henry Croft, who died April 4, 1954 at West Liscomb, Guysborough County, NS. He was 79 years old. The record states he was born on January 13, 1875, and that he worked as a fisherman for 55 years. He was married to Jane at the time. He was buried in the West Liscomb Cemetery, which is located near Slate Rock. I’ve been to Slate Rock many times, and one day when I learned about the few headstones in this small cemetery, I attempted to find it. However, it was grown in, and after searching for an hour, we still didn’t find it. I hope to return this summer, find it and take pictures of the stones.
  • Hannah Elizabeth Mailman died April 12, 1916 at the age of 77 years. She married Henry Croft and was Jacob Emery Croft’s mother. Her death record states she was born at Gegoggin, NS. She was buried at St. Luke’s Anglican Church Cemetery, Liscomb.
