Two Simeon Bakers

Today in my alphabetical search for birth records for the area, I found Simeon A. Baker. This was the second Simeon Baker that appeared in birth records I’ve transcribed.

The Simeon birth record I transcribed today was Simeon A. Baker, born on April 21, 1875 at Marie Joseph, Guysborough County, NS, the son of Eliza Romkey and Joseph Baker. Joseph was a fisherman, and he and Eliza married on October 21, 1873 at Marie Joseph.

The other birth record for a Simeon Baker was transcribed March 6th. He was born July 17, 1870 at Liscomb, the son of Ann Curtis and Benjamin Baker. Benjamin was also a fisherman, and he and Ann wed in 1855 at Harbour Grace, Newfoundland.

I found a marriage record for this Simeon, son of Ann and Benjamin. He married Arabella McKinley on November 1, 1889 at Liscomb. At the time, Simeon was 19 years old and working as a fisherman. His mother was recorded as Mary A. This would make her full name Mary Ann Curtis.

Arabella McKinley was 21 years old when she married. She was born at Liscomb, the daughter of Elizabeth Unknown and William McKinley.

James R. Lang and Norah S. Rudolph stood as witnesses for the couple.

According to the death record for Simeon, son of Ann and Benjamin, he died on January 25, 1950 at Liscomb. He was 79 years old. He had worked as a fisherman for 54 years, last working in 1940. He was buried in St. Luke’s Cemetery, Liscomb, on January 27, 1950.

I found no further record of Simeon Baker, son of Eliza and Joseph. He may have died young.

Liscomb Island Cemetery: Miriam Ann Lang Pye

This is a small cemetery located on the eastern tip of Liscomb Island. At one time, it was known as Crook’s Island. Up until 1986, when the Liscomb Lighthouse became unmanned, families lived there. I have never been to the island though I longed to visit my entire life. I’m hoping this summer will take me there.

Ruth M. (Rumley) Legge was told the cemetery is located near the eastern tip of the island, where visitors arrived from the mainland. At one time, a road from this landing area to the lighthouse was kept in working order for a vehicle to travel. The remains of the old road is visible on Google Map.

Today I added a page for this cemetery. Three individuals are supposedly buried there. There could be more in unmarked graves, but only three are noted on headstones.

According to Miriam Ann Lang‘s death record, she died June 12, 1919 on Liscomb Island and was buried there. She was 37 years old. She was born in c1882 on the island. She was the daughter of Jessie Ann Unknown and William Robert Lang.

According to her marriage record, she wed Charles Henry Pye on September 27, 1913 at Liscomb Island. She was 31 years old at the time. Charles was 27 years old, the son of Charlotte Unknown and Henry Pye. He was a mariner who was born at Liscomb.

1945 Recipes by Myrtle Alice Fleet (nee Snow) of Ecum Secum

The Wartime Economy Book of Recipes for 1945 was published on April 10, 1945. The recipes were “selected from more than 8000 Maritime recipes” submitted for consideration. Over three hundred different communities from the three Maritime Provinces participated.

On pages 21 and 24 are recipes submitted by Mrs. Ronald Fleet of Ecum Secum. I believe this was Myrtle Alice Snow who married Ronald Murray Laird Fleet.

According to his birth record, Ronald Fleet was born November 25, 1911 at Ecum Secum, Guysborough County, NS, the son of Margaret Publicover and Jeffrey Fleet. He and Myrtle Alice Snow wed August 13, 1936 at St. Barnabas Rectory, Ecum Secum.

Fisherman’s Prayer

God grant that I may live to fish until my dying day

And when it comes to my last cast I then humbly pray

When in the lord’s safe landing net I’m peacefully asleep

That in his mercy I will be judged as big enough to keep

It broke our heart to lose you but you did not go alone…

For part of us went with you that day

God called you home.

Some stones will last centuries, but this one may only last a life time, and this is why it is so important to capture these perishable grave markers while the printing and details are still visible. This is a beautifully-made cross, one that while stands will invite visitors to the come and take a look.

According to Douglas Lewis Feltmate’s obituary, he was the son of Alma Ruth Feltmate and the grandson of Mary Jane and Nathaniel Feltmate. He married Mary Glenn and had two children. He died on June 2, 2002, at the age of 53, doing what he loved: sport fishing.
